MEXICAN POLITICS

Some times I happen to wonder why Mexican politicians can be so stupid at times specially, when dealing with important affairs. The reality is they are not. They can be anything but stupid, at least not the way we think they are. The thing is they have got their own agenda. That is the case now in Oaxaca. President Fox can not remove the state Governor from office (which has always been the easiest way out) because basically he can not break the political agreement he´s got with PRI. He needs their support to back up “President” Calderon´s imposition. On the other hand, by removing governors from power just would show people the way the can recover the nation sovereignty, and that is a bad thing, for them I mean. They would rather make us laugh and cry by presenting themselves as politically and socially dumb than losing power and therefore great business opportunities at the people´s expense: does it ring a bell?

OAXACA: WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?

At 16:00 this afternoon several hundred agents from the so-called Federal Preventative Police (Military Police) entered in Oaxaca City´s downtown in an effort to forcibly remove striking school teachers who have occupied the main square since May calling for the State Governor ouster.

One thing is to ignore a problem, other thing is to solve a problem the wrong way, but to do both things one after the other is just unbelievable: once again “Bravo Fox!!!”

A GREAT FIGHT

Two weeks ago Croatian Mirko Cro Cop became the PRIDE middleweight champion after defeating Josh Barnett. Earlier that night Mirko and Brazilian Wanderlei Silva faced off in a combat that turned out to be one of the greatest fights ever seen!!!

DAMN!!!

Mumia Abu-Jamal- The Tragedies of Political Fear

U. S. ELECTION 2006

Citizens treated as consumers (virtual democracy working at its best):

Last week: Republicans

This week: Democrats

When democracy is reduced to an electoral fight and when that fight is basically expressed on T. V., it becomes not just a vulgar dispute that legitimizes the exchange between elites but democracy itself becomes virtual, because it is never the real interests of people what is claimed. In Mexico we have just lived that but the U S. sets up the best example.

THE NEW YORK TIMES AND THE WAR IN IRAQ

In its yestreday´s editorial The New York Times addressed the current state of affairs the U.S. government faces in Iraq, where the question, it states, it is not so much “how America can win” but “whether the United States can extricate itself without leaving behind an unending civil war that will spread more chaos and suffering throughout the Middle East, while spawning terrorism across the globe”.

The NYT editorial was fair and accurate in saying that: Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld should be removed from office; that it must be made clear that the United States will not keep permanent military bases in Iraq; that an amnesty for insurgents has to be provided; that it is required to transfer troops to Baghdad from elsewhere in the country so as to restore a minimum sanity; that an agreement must be reached among the countries in the region in order to contribute to the reconstruction of Iraq and finally, and above all, that is essential to acknowledge reality due to “truth will only take us so far, but it is the right way to begin”.

As for the content, I hardly believe anyone could object what stated but I still think 3 things seem to have been left behind, namely:

1. America should not be military invading Iraq in the first place: as we all know today there was never a legitimate reason to do that.

2. The real reason behind this invasion it´s always been oil and nothing else: something that everybody is aware of now.

3. And finally, the estimated cost of war is 338 billion dollars so far, what does not leave too much room for a withdrawal of those who have always seen this as a financial transaction and therefore seek earnings from their investment.

Hence I think that stop the war in Iraq possibly implied in the first place remove from power those that started off this mess.
As simple as it might sound: somebody once said truth does not have to be expressed with baroque words, especially when everybody knows it.

IT´S NEVER BEEN "STAY THE COURSE"

President Bush stated on Sunday that his strategy in Iraq has never been "stay the course". In one of the segments from the video below President Fox (Mexico) seems to be listening to President Bush very attentive: Now I know who Fox learned how to be such a liar from!

WHO IS BARACK OBAMA?

Four weeks ago I had no idea who Barack Obama was. Then I came across one video with his take on the Bush´s detainee bill while writing my first post for this Blog. I got stunned, I have to admit it. In here, what basically caught my eye was his personality: intelligent, honest and eloquent. Check VIDEO PART ONE and PART TWO

As I started looking for some information, I learned that he had become public after his keynote address at the Democratic National Convention, july 27th, 2004. WATCH VIDEO

It is obvious that this was a political act and logically Obama´s speech was political: ideological, in the most liberal American possible style, you know: multiculturalism, liberal rights, American values and American dreams.

However behind this discourse I see a more complex guy. I am not going to define his profile here: maybe it is just fair to keep this guy´s name in mind: more than one thinks he could be the next President of the U.S. in 2008.

* Barack Obama (D) is nowadays the only African American U.S. Senator

DEATH OF HABEAS CORPUS

"YOUR WORDS ARE LIES, SIR"

Keith Ollberman (MSNBC) spoke out against the signing of the Military Commissions Act and the loss of Habeas Corpus, yesterday night:

"With the distance of history, the questions will be narrowed and few: Did this generation of Americans take the threat seriously, and did we do what it takes to defeat that threat?

Wise words.

And ironic ones, Mr. Bush.

Your own, of course, yesterday, in signing the Military Commissions Act.

You spoke so much more than you know, Sir.

Sadly — of course — the distance of history will recognize that the threat this generation of Americans needed to take seriously… was YOU."

At leats he says something. WATCH THE VIDEO NOW

AND THE GUY DID IT

President Bush signed into law the Military Commission Act 2006 yesterday morning.

U.S Senator Russ Feingold stated
that Americans will "look back on this day as a stain on our nation´s history":

Statement of U.S. Senator Russ Feingold On the President Signing the Military Commissions Act
October 17, 2006

“The legislation signed by the President today violates basic principles and values of our constitutional system of government. It allows the government to seize individuals on American soil and detain them indefinitely with no opportunity to challenge their detention in court. And the new law would permit an individual to be convicted on the basis of coerced testimony and even allow someone convicted under these rules to be put to death.
The checks and balances of our system of government and the fundamental fairness of the American people and legal system are among our greatest strengths in the fight against terrorism. I am deeply disappointed that Congress enacted this law. We will look back on this day as a stain on our nation’s history.”

HABEAS CORPUS

In common law countries, habeas corpus (/'heɪbiəs 'kɔɹpəs/), Latin for "you [should] have the body", is the name of a legal instrument or writ by means of which detainees can seek release from unlawful imprisonment. A writ of habeas corpus is a court order addressed to a prison official (or other custodian) ordering that a detainee be brought to the court so it can be determined whether or not that person is imprisoned lawfully and whether or not he or she should be released from custody. The writ of habeas corpus in common law countries is an important instrument for the safeguarding of individual freedom against arbitrary state action.

In this excellent piece of work, Keith Olberman (MSNBC) discusses the consecuences of the bush´s detainee bill.

In here, Jack Cafferty (CNN) says Bush´s efforts may seek to insulate him from liability given the possible war crimes comitted in Irak.

THIS LADY REALLY ROCKS!!!

Super good looking and intelligent Amy Goodman (1957) has become the icon of the US liberal left on the open media. Graduated from Harvard in 1984, she is the host of DEMOCRACY NOW! radio program where she has regular coverage of topics related to the anti-war and anti-globalization movements. Here is a PIECE of a really funny interview in which despite the jerky dude who hosts the program, she looks just awsome!

STATE OF DENIAL

SIMPLY DENYING A PROBLEM DOES NOT MAKE IT GO AWAY

AP informed yesterday that Woodward´s latest book, that went on sale on Sep 30th, is selling big, going into its third printing, with 900,000 copies in print for the latest edition. READ REPORT HERE

A short clip summing up its content can be found
HERE

The book is chock-full of tidbits about the Bush administration secrecy and dishonesty on the so called war on terror. It also includes: Jonh Kerry´s phone call conceding the election to President Bush and his crying over it right after, Bush´s parents misgivings about the invasion of Iraq and Henry Kissinger´s role in forming policy on Iraq. Some interesting audio clips can be found
HERE

State of denial: I wonder why I keep on thinking of another ranger who was also President of a different country not so far from the US.

A LITTLE KAMEL NACIF

Six-term Republican Rep. Mark Foley of Florida . . . chairman of the House Caucus on Missing and Exploited Children, said he would resing
immediately after ABC News reported he sent messages to current and former congressional pages with repeated references to sexual organs and acts . . .

Foley was the author of the key sexual predator provisions of the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006, which Bush signed in July. So the congressional point man on sexual predation is -- or rather was -- a sexual predator. Why am I not surprised?

Maf54 stands for Mark Foley:

Maf54: You in your boxers, too?
Boy: Nope, just got home. I had a college interview that went late.
Maf54: Well, strip down and get relaxed.
Another message:
Maf54: What ya wearing?
Boy: tshirt and shorts
Maf54: Love to slip them off of you.
And this one:
Maf54: Do I make you a little horny?
Boy: A little.
Maf54: Cool.
