THE RIGHT TO DECIDE

Yesterday, after some difficulties, Mexico City lawmakers finally voted to legalize abortion. Before this, abortion was permitted only in special cases, including after rape, if the fetus had defects or if the mother´s life was at risk. Now, this law will allow women to have an abortion up to 12 weeks into their pregnancy if having the child “would negatively affect their life project”.

This is not just another positive step forward for health issues handling (in a country where it is said that up to a million illegal abortions take the lives of thousands of poor women every year), it is basically another victory for one of the basic and fundamental women´s rights, namely: their right to decide.

In moral terms, I have always respected everybody´s opinions, including those who fiercely oppose abortion here in Mexico. Though I have to say that, in the concrete fight for life (and the vindication of its main principals: Justice, Truth, Knowledge, etc) I have never seen them in the front line…

Hi ZHP!

Portugal's government legalized, recently, abortion in the first 10 weeks of pregnancy, after a referendum voted for that proposal.

The results:

Yes: 59,25%
No: 40,75%

Hey Teorias, bro! Thank you very much for your comment: very interesting, indeed!

I understand there is a huge controversy around this topic. I see no way we could possibly all agree on it... but fortunately not all issues depend on consensus to be solved but rather on practical measures that, like I said, not just correctly address a health problem but basically vindicate a fundamental right.

Have a great day my friend!!

Hey.... Those are good news for society, we have done something quite similar in Locombia but it is not fully legal yet. I do not actually have any moral issue on it -yet I disagree on the basis that we should be responsible for our deeds- but I understand that is to benefit the entire society in public health just to mention a item.

Hey Yo Darko! Indeed, that is the way I think we all should see this very complicated problem: as a benefit for the whole society... I celebrate your take on this issue. Thank you very much for your comment!

Cheers bro!!

Morraly it's hard to decide what's right! But without a doubt filling the world with unwanted children and unhappy Mothers who are unable to support their children is far worse! Remeber that I also live in same country as the Pope...where everything is a sin! That sucks big time!
Have fun my friend!

Kev, my man! Thank you very much for your comment Yo..

I am gonna tell you something funny: I am not in favor of abortion; as a matter of fact I think nobody is in his/her right mind is in favor of such a thing... I am in favor of recognizing women´s right to decide; in favor of a law to provide them with the best possible medical conditions if that were the decision; in favor of, as you suggest, assuring every single kid´s conditions to live a good life in all of the aspects, in favor of a real sexual education... I am sure that you think of this issue the same way I do.

Cheers my friend!!

This is such a controversial issue as there are lot of underlying issues connected to legalising abortion. However, I strongly support women's freedom of choice.

Good comment, thank you my friend! What I said before is that even when it is no more than a wishful thinking, it would be always better not to have abortions at all! Reality is we have them and therefore it is very important to assure they are carried out under the best possible medical conditions. On the other hand, women should always decide: that is fundamental. Finally, sexual education is a key point as far as human development is concerned. In our countries that, as you know, is a complete failure.

Cheers!
